So I've been working on some new additions to the Win32 Declare Library, and I have some fairly grand plans for where to take the project when RBv6 comes out. But I find myself lacking in new ideas for things to implement. There are a few holes that I am trying to patch up in the current version of the library, and I'm starting to add more common controls that I run across -- but I'm really just looking for new ideas.
So do you have any ideas on what to add?
I must admit, I am a bit disappointed in the "open source" portion of the library in-so-much as I thought more people would contribute. When the first release came out (and the second), I had a handful of people submit code to be added, which was awesome! But as I've posted more releases, the number of submissions has dropped by quite a bit. Now, this could be because I've managed to cover so much ground that most people just don't have anything new to add. But I find myself wondering if it's just because people don't want to bother adding new stuff....
In any event, I have no plans to stop working on the declare library. I rather much enjoy working on it, and it's fun to hear from people who use it in their projects. Heck, I've even had a few people donate to help me cover costs! That's really awesome -- to know that people appreciate the work I've put into this project and are willing to pay me for it. I mean, when I sit down and think about it, I know I could make more if I made it a closed-source project and charged for copies of it. But that's just no fun! The whole point to programming (especially in REALbasic) is that anyone can do it, and to force people to pay for solutions to things they could do themselves via declares just doesn't make that much sense to me. Now plugin writing on the other hand... ;-)
The other thing that surprises me is how much time I've spent on the project. I would venture to guess I've put in well over 100 hours working on the declare library over the last 5 months... I'm sure my girlfriend isn't too happy about that number tho... :-P
Oh well, I'm beginning to prattle, so I'll bring this note to a close. Feel free to post any ideas you have for the declare library tho! I'm always interested in new ideas.
100 hours?! So that's how long I have spent on the couch staring at the wall while you program! Oh well, one of these days I'll drag you to lab and make you do titrations with me. (Though it won't be 100 hours worth!)
Sorry babe! I know how bored you get... Maybe I will go to a lab with you some day. I'm sure I can cook up some awesome things in a chem lab. :-D
I'd still love you if you spent 100+ hours on your code. Hell, you'd probably ask me to read over the code to ensure that your uber code monkey skills were still up to par! ;)
Bye sugar
