Could You Imagine?

So Jake pointed this out to me today: They discovered a new species of humans that lived up until just 500 years ago before becoming extinct

This got me thinking... These people lived on a tiny island near Java and were only about 3 feet tall when fully grown. They probably had almost no contact with our species of humans (otherwise the diseases we carry would have wiped them out in a generation like what happened with native Americans and Africans), and so they must have lived life almost oblivious to the fact that there was an entire world outside of their island. It made me think of two different questions.

1) Could you imagine being one of the last people of that species alive? They obviously were thinking beings -- they used tools and hunted, and managed to stay alive on a small island with a lot of komodo dragons on it! What would it be like to be the last of your race?

2) What would run thru your mind if someone from our species of human landed on your island and took you back on a ship? I mean, these people probably had never even seen a large ship, much less spent time in a populated city. I don't think your mind could even handle it -- I think it would just shut down and you'd go into a sort of catatonic state. This would be like aliens swooping down and picking us up and putting us on their spaceships!

I think it's absolutely amazing that these people managed to exist for so long right under our noses, but we never knew! It makes me wonder if there are other human species we still don't know about? The rainforests are a huge area... and there are a ton of islands out there. Who knows?!
