So I'm just curious...

Who here is going to attend REAL World 2006 this year? It's over Feb 27-Mar1.

If you're going to attend, have you bought your earlybird tickets, or are you waiting?

If you're not going to attend, why?

If you're coming, what is the session you're most looking forward to?

If you're not coming, what is the session you really wish you could attend?

I'm waiting to see if I'm allowed to go. :)

I give you my full permission. :-)

I'm still debating it... Feb is awfully early in the year for me... I went to this years but it was over spring break (much more convenient). We'll see...

(is it my imagination or did the price go up too?)

~joe

I am not certain if the price went up, but I know it's longer this time around.

Sadly no.

Why? I don't expect to make any money from RB for a year or so.
That makes it pretty hard to justify the expense of a 10,000 mile round trip plus accommodation etc.

I'd really like to attend
"Design Patterns in REALbasic"
"A Deep Look at Threads"
"Networking 201" (I *hope* I don't need 101)
"Introduction to Creating Plugins Using GCC"
and (depending how deep it goes) "How The Compiler Works"

I wish I could go, but living in europe and all the troubles with flying to USA, so no. Wish you guys would have one of those in Europe.
But I would like to go, don't get me wrong.

I would like to attend all XML

I wish we'd have one in EU as well -- I've never been there! ;-)

Do RealBasic design awards winners get free admission?

No idea, but you could contact janet@realsoftware.com to ask that question.

Woo! I'm going =). I don't know which one I'm most looking forward to, but Mastering Declares / Networking 201 / Design Patterns / How the Compiler Works pop out at me.

I'll do my best to come so you can pay me a drink :-)

Not unless I can actually take time off of school (fairly unlikely) and get a free ride (possibly unliklier) :)

Oh -- Sessions I'd like to attend:
How to Build a Robot and Win a $3 billion Defense Contract in 21 Days
The Secrets of Houdini Revealed
Declaring Yourself a Master
Creating Plugins with the Generator of Crappy Code

1) I'm thinking about attending.

2) I might have to work.

3) I'm looking forward to finding out the future plans of REALbasic. You never know what these people are up to sometimes!

4) Insert some session that I'm doing

It's kind of funny, I would have loved to visit REALWorld two years ago, this year I'll be in Houston for a conference 1-5 of march so I would actually be able to go to REALworld (austin doesn't look *that* far away from houston ... at least not from where I'm sitting :) ).

But I'll stay in Houston. Why? Simply because I haven't launched RB in two-three months and perhaps only 10 times since july.

Yep, I'll be there and bought my pass, tickets and reserved hotel rooms quite some time ago now.

The sessions that grabbed my attention the most:
Design Patterns In RealBasic
Deep Look At Threads
Mastering Declares
Taming Complexity...

...and tonnes of others, including the business type ones.

Did I just see a post by Jon Johnson?!? Aaron is putting your NilObject site to shame. SHAME!! SHAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMME!

;-)

~joe

Actually, Jon's just an experiment in AI that fell by the wayside. He never really existed at all.

Unfortunately i am not able to come because of my health (had hartinfarct) and because of a drastic lower income (lost my job), so i have to cut expenses quite a bit.
But if i had a choice i would visit the object oriented programming 1+2, the advanced databasesession, the Activex-story, the datatypes and overloading lecture, the webseance, and ...ofcourse the keynote. In fact i would love the most of them but life is too short.
But most i am interested in seeing the RB-folks in person and ofcourse all the RB-users.
I hope RB will make this time a full report to all people who couldn't come.
However, i missed a session about Swordfish or is that included in the websession?
Anyway, to all people attending the Realworld, have fun !!

Just teased you a little by not selecting one of your sessions. You were the only person who managed to get his name 3 times mentioned in the sessionlist. And guess what... i saw 3 names in the list soooo... you are unique!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm waiting for it to be somewhere other than Texas. How about Seattle?

Have you guys considered recording the seminars and webcasting them, for a fee? I would like to learn about some new RB stuff, but am unable to come down at that time.

Whoa, just after PyCon in Dallas! ... and 4 hours..

@Anonymous -- we have thought about it, and I know I've certainly pushed for it. But it's very expensive to do (even half-assed). From the numbers I've heard, it'd be almost cheaper just to buy a ticket to REAL World than to buy the DVDs. But who knows, it's certainly not ruled out from what I've heard.

I haven't bought any tickets yet. My wife says that we should have the money this year, but I am not so sure. I thoughoughly loved it last year. Putting faces to names from the NUG was great!
"Database Programming 201" if technical enough.
"XML 201" only for XSLT.
"Web Services and Internet Classes" sounds cool (especially if it shows us SwordFish).
"A Practical Approach To The Perfect Product Launch" may be interesting.
"From Armageddon To Zombies - Creating 3D Games In REALBasic" very cool.
"Robot Design and REALbasic: A Case Study" cool!
"How The Compiler Works" could be interesting.
"Developing Kiosk Applications" been here a couple of times but would like another perspective.
"Mastering Declares" I need to jump into this. I've shied away from declares since leaving the VB world.
"Introduction to Creating Plugins Using GCC" could be interesting but my C is getting rusty. :)

I'm going, but I haven't booked a hotel room or flight yet. I'll be going to the compiler, thread and design pattern sessions, and probably some database sessions (I know SQL, but want to see some SQLite specifics).

1) Sadly, no.

2) Spring break for me is a week later, and I can't afford to miss a week of classes. And then there's the minor issue of getting from Virginia to Texas at a low cost, and paying the conference fee. How about student discounts?

3) N/A

4) XML 201, Database 101 & 201, Improving code performance, How the compiler works, and possibly networking.

I might go. Sounds like it could be interesting...

California's spring break is April 8-16. :(

Well, I'll go, but only if Jon and Mars are going to be there :)

I see there are two comments about the advanced database session. I'm leading it and I'm leaning more toward a SQLite tips and tricks kind of session. I think if I try to shoot for an advanced SQL session, I'm going to miss.

I'll be there, with other 2 programmers.

After attending in 2004 and 2005, I think it is a great place to share knowledge, and Austin is great in Feb/March

Ahh, and after attending two years in a row, I hope to attend a session exclusively on printing (not only a slide in the graphics session). There are too many tricks printing from RB.

Can't join, again. Bordeaux-Austin is too expensive a proposition for me. :-(
A Europe REAL World is not really an option I guess, but as I mentioned every time since the first announcement of the first Real World, organizing the event on the East Coast would make it cheaper for us fuhreenahs to go. Europe-NYC or Europe-Washington, etc is much much cheaper...

Anyways, the sessions I'll miss most:

Creating 3D Games In REALBasic
How The Compiler Works
Design Patterns in REALbasic
Coding Challenge Time Trials
Introduction to Creating Plugins Using GCC

I'm planning to go.

I might go. That would be a definite "yes" if the date were changed so it were immediately before or after South by Southwest. So far there's been at least a week between them.

I'm a concert photographer, and if I'm going to make the long trip to Austin (36 hours each way by train), it would be much easier to justify if I could do both things in one trip.
