Who here has played, or still plays Magic the Gathering (the actual card game)?
And to show my stunningly geeky side, what's your best deck? Your strangest deck?

Oh aaron....I think I feel ashamed for you.
Silence you! ;-)
I played about 10 years ago (gosh has it been that long?)
I had a pretty good white/green deck, but I bet that it would be blown away with all of the new cards.
I have always wanted to create my own version of the game with a slightly different set of rules. I thought about financing getting all of the cards printed, but that would be a lot of money. So I decided to start with a computer game version, but never had the chance to write it yet.
Hey, this is a geek post - shouldn't you have made it private? "Forgive me Aaron, for I have geeked"
But I'll come out of the closet. My wife and I were big Magic players years ago, then dropped it. In the last few months, though, we dusted off our decks and taught our son to play, so we have passed the disease on to future generations.
As for best deck, I can't really remember much of mine (I liked black and red), but I do recall a nasty white/green my wife would play (Serra Angel and killer Bees, with circles or protection and some nasty card that hammered you if you had swamps in play often gave her the win).
Dude, my stacked deck featuring Jenna Jameson was quite the fun play...
Well, I have to admit that I don't collect any of the newer sets (I stopped about 5 years ago). But I've really been in the mood to play again lately. I think the game is a blast and would love to find people to play with around St Cloud again.
Hey, there's nothing wrong with being a geek!
I had a bunch of friends who used to play it. Hell, even my little cousin played it as a kid. Never got into it myself, but that's mainly because, other than for stuff like Lord of the Rings, I was never that much into D&D-style fantasy adventures. (I'm more the "Star Wars/Star Trek" type of geek.)
There's nothing wrong with the game, if that's what you're into. I just was never that interested.
Got my Nokia 770 today. Now that's cool...
Magic The Gathering still exists?
I watched people play it in High School, but as far as I could tell the game basically dissolved into "the people with the most expensive cards win." Since I can't afford dumb things like playing cards, I didn't ever bother to learn to play myself.
Uh, I'm with Lis, this is rather embarrasing.
@James -- I don't think it was "the most spendy cards win." I have some very creative decks made strictly out of common (10 cents a piece) cards that kick the crap out of people. Granted, the spendy cards sure HELP. ;-)
@Bill -- why don't you go back to your cave and shush? :-P
"The people with the most expensive cards win?" Very few of my friends would agree with you. The ones who usually said such things either a.) like myself have never played, and b.) didn't have any skills. Yeah, I watched a few games, and most of the time, it was the guy with the skills who won, not the guy whose mommy and daddy bought them their cards.
BTW, most of my friends are either computer geeks, musicians, artists or hardcore D&D/Sci-Fi/Comic book freaks. The only thing embarassing is that we're the type of people growing in numbers. ;)
Magic... Lawd... It's been 10 years since I pulled out those cards. I can't even recall what my deck was like. I never became good enough (or was willing to spend enough money on boosters) to create a custom deck.
However, if you wanna get into fantasy geekdom, I still think D&D kicks a$$. It inspired a host of other (many read: better) RPG games. It even inspired (at least to some degree) Magic: The Gathering.
This was a huge phenomenon when I was in middle school (I guess that reveals my age). I got really into the cards for a while, got a whole box of boosters for Fallen Empires expecting it to be as good as Arabian Nights or Artifacts or The Dark but it really, really wasn't. But I think I have actually played the game fewer than thirty times.
On the other hand, I don't know anyone who hasn't played it--truly! I asked everyone I know at one time or another, hoping to find someone who hasn't, but I haven't.
My opinion: the cards themselves are often truly beautiful. When I was young it seemed like the people with the expensive cards won. Now it seems like the strategy is more complex: buy some special cards, devote a substantial fraction of your income to expansions, and play the game constantly. I really don't have the income or the patience to play (why does a game take so long, anyway?) but then I'm just not much of a gamer in any sense. I'd rather be programming. :)
Well, to let out my geeky side a little here...
I had way too many cards, and way too much time. So I used to come up with creative decks. Sure, everyone and their mom had a land destruction deck and a white weenie deck, etc. I had them too (along with some other staples of life).
I had a slight/hack deck that would change color words on cards. Almost impossible to play against, and used almost entirely common cards.
Things like that.
I enjoyed playing because it was a mind twist trying to come up with new ways to match cards to make a deck.
I'd really love to get back into it -- so if anyone's in the area and feels like playing (or learning to play), let me know. I'm peachy with loaning decks out to play with as well. :-)
Hah... My brother used to play and collect the cards! I have no idea how to play, but it looks like a great cardgame!
I used to play magic cards with a couple friends in grade school. I can't remember my deck...I think it was a rather unipressive red/white/black combo. So yeah, the last time I played was probably...um...8 years ago? Damn that makes me feel old and I'm only 22. I don't have my deck anymore; a couple years ago Dan got into magic cards a bit and I think I sold him my deck. No idea where those cards are now XD
