Back from the dead?

Sorta. :-P

I spent a blissful weekend doing (almost) nothing aside from playing Oblivion. :-) I haven't geeked out like that in a while, so it was really a blast and I'm glad I did it. Needless to say, it threw my sleep schedule off to stay up until 4am playing a video game (and waking up the next day at 1pm). But worth it.

So guess what? We shipped r2 today. Surprise!

My favorite "feature" of r2 is the improved stability. Cut, copy and paste work now (thank god!). The properties editor no longer munges property definitions with spaces in them (such as Foobar( 1, 2 )). The strange anti-aliasing and disappearing icons issues on Windows were resolved. And about a billion other fixes.

There was more than just bug fixes in this release, but everything we focused on was related to the IDE user experience. So we added some time-savers in there as well. The Switch To menu is back in the code editor. You can now hide empty events. You can copy folders between projects. Added a "New Implementor" contextual menu. The list goes on!

But -- I think my all-time favorite thing with this release is...

The System metafont is now correct on Windows! Yay!!!!! That means when you specify System, you get MS Sans Serif on Windows >= 98, Tahoma on Windows >= 2000, and Segoee UI on Windows >= Vista. Instead of just stupid MS Sans Serif everywhere. Note that this will change the visual appearance of your app. If you want to be incorrect, you can always go back to hard-coding the font to be what you want to be (so there's still an option open for you, though I would advise you not to do that). But your apps will now be using the correct font with System. w00t. :-D

So what's your favorite thing(s) about the new release?

Quick question... Does using "System" respect a user's changes to their Windows appearance settings? ie they change the default fonts in display settings... etc...?

No, it doesn't... but that's interesting. Can you give me the steps to change the system's font? I've never found a way to modify that in any control panels.

Display -> Appearance -> Advanced has a lot of font settings, but none for "system font" that I can tell, unless it just has a really stupid name. I've booted up TweakUI and I can't find a way to change the system font there, either... other than registry hacking, I'm not sure it's possible.

I'll fire you off an email with a screencap or two in a few minutes

You know what? I might have jumped the gun a bit. I just realized that most of the font settings in the Display settings dialog are really about titlebars, messagedialogs, menu items, and icon titles.

You're right... the actual app settings aren't and "default" windows font aren't part of it....

*slaps himself in the head*

Don't I feel like a butthead :P

Pointers!

I second SirG3.

I like the direct link to RBLibrary.com in the help menu!

Bill, you are so full of shit. :-P

LOL! A guy can dream, no?

My absolute favorite new feature in 2006r2 was support for Universal Binaries.

Oops. Time warp.

Yeah, Universal Binaries will be in 2007r2 at this rate! Sigh...

But the stability is appreciated.

I think this will be known as the Great IDE Update of 2006.

My biggest Win32 app seemed a bit perkier in XP today, but I only spent a few minutes with it.

Dude, people will have a stroke!

Eh. Maybe more beer will help. : - )

My favorite feature is also the appropriate system font on Windows. Seems like a small thing, but it's so important.

The fix for the anti-aliasing text and disappearing icons and the fix for the System font (I really hated this "bug").

@Russ: "Aaron wrote" or "Adam wrote"? Stop drinking beer when reading blogs ;)

Dang, I hosed that up pretty good.

hiccup.

Well, I just had problems with Ctrl+V (paste) with a new project and was working with it for a few minutes :(

This is really strange. It was working just fine and suddenly stopped working. Closing RB and starting solved the problem. At least the contextual paste menu seems to always work ;)
