BF2: a shining example of another crappy EA game

| | Comments (7)

So I bought Battlefield 2 today so that I could participate in the LAN fun tomorrow at Adam's place... unfortunately, it seems as though BF2 will not work when you use a PS2->USB adapter. The way the game queries for keyboard information, it simply won't respond to keyboard input that's been piped thru the adapter. Since I have no USB keyboard or mouse (only PS/2, thanks to my KVM switch being PS/2), this rather much pisses me off. Everything else (including other games) don't have an issue with this setup. Just BF2.

For those of you interested in what I'm talking about -- you spawn in, and can use the mouse just fine. However, using the keyboard only picks up about every fifth keystroke, and there is no key repeat. So you can't move, and can only bring up the menu by mashing the escape key about ten times.

So I'm a bit peeved that I have a 50$, non-returnable paper weight. Silly me for assuming that the game would work. Hopefully Adam (or someone else at the LAN) has a spare USB keyboard and mouse. Otherwise I won't be able to join in the fun until Counter Strike time.

So I pulled out my old Mac USB keyboard and 5-button MS mouse...

Everything works fine now.

Ha! My idea was to go out and buy a keyboard and mouse...silly me.

What about just buying a PS2 to USB adapter? They are usually under $10. Cheaper than a whole new keyboard.

Doesn't matter anyway. You found replacements.

The whole point of a KVM is to clear desktop clutter. Instead of piping through the KVM, another solution to reduce desktop clutter could be to use a wireless keyboard which you can store out of the way when you don't need it.

Get another screen and try Synergy (synergy2.sourceforge.net).

Best. Program. Ever!

Welcome to the 21st century...only a noob would still be using a PS/2 keyboard and mouse.

Interesting topic... I'm working in this industry myself and I don't agree about this in 100%, but I added your page to my bookmarks and hope to see more interesting articles in the future
