Latest alpha finally released, and other stuff

Man, that took a lot longer than I had hoped -- it took forever to get this alpha out because every time we'd get close, we'd notice another one of those "oh, shoot, let's just fix that" issues.

Almost all of my new UI changes are in, which is pretty spiffy. I understand that one of them still needs a bit more work (at least, that's what Dave tells me) because of exceptions and such. But I'm pretty sure my major stuff is almost done. I still have some minor tricks up my sleeve, but I am almost back to bug fixing full time again. I'm a bit surprised at the lack of comment on what I've been working on though -- but I'm sure by the time I wake up tomorrow I'll be up to my ears in noise from people on the betas list. :-P

I went out to George and Nancy's rental place today. Man are they work-aholics! They're awesome though; they're giving me loads of good black dirt to put down around the yard and by the landscaping block. I went and got two bobcat loads put into the trailer tonight. I spread about 10 wheelbarrows full on the front lawn before my arm got sore, so I'm about 1/5 of the way done with this load. Hopefully tomorrow night I'll get a bunch more spread on the lawn -- enough so that I can go pick up another trailer full. The dirt's going to be hauled away from the rental on Thur, so I'm hoping to get a second load before they haul it away. Adding the extra dirt around the yard should help it hold moisture better when it rains, which makes the lawn thicken up quite a bit. It'll also help the flowers grow in the landscape block once Juan gets the sprinkler heads moved (which should be Wed).

The other thing I am hoping Juan can do is get my well pump hooked into the sprinkler line. Then I can call that project "done." w00t!

I'm dragging my feet on laying the rest of the landscaping block. I'm hoping to get it done tomorrow night (along with tossing dirt around) so I can bring the left-overs back and be done with it. Then that'd be project #2 that's done. But for some reason I'm really dragging on finishing up. Not like the weather hasn't been perfect for it! It's been 70-75 and sunny out for the last week or so.

The projects I still have left to do on my current list are putting up some gutter on parts of the house. And the deck, oh boy, the deck! I've got the plans all laid out, so it's just a matter of getting the material and getting it done. But I've gotta finish up some of my other loose ends before I start that project. Hopefully I'll get a start on it in the next week or two.

I got my plane tickets to go down and see Lis! I'm heading back down to Austin on June 28, and getting back July 8th. But I just realized something today... July 8 is when I was supposed to be paintballing with Adam. I'm hoping he can punt back a week because I'm gonna be pissed if I miss yet another paintball day. But Lis is worth it. :-)

She's coming up sometime in August, which is also exciting. She hasn't seen the house since I've put all this work into it. Hopefully she approves (I'm sure she will -- she's been hearing me blab about it enough).

Oh well, enough prattling for one evening, I think I am going to go play some BF2, or perhaps Oblivion.

Yeah, the mailing list has been oddly silent. I'm on dial up, so I'm downloading the 36 MB(!) update right now. Looking forward to the UI changes! I'm so curious as to what they are; I can't read the release notes until tomorrow morning. Talk about torture.

Dial-up? What, did you move into a cave? ;-) I dunno if you'll like the UI changes or not. But you'll certainly be surprised by them.

A guy on the street living in a cardboard box with an aluminum foil hat asked me to forward this to you:

"User interface improvements? Did you make the user interface even more un-Mac-like, you Anti-Christ?
-GS"

>:-P

Sorry you have to put up with crap from this guy, Aaron. You don't deserve it.

Wheres the VIC-20 support?!?

Bill, The VIC-20 was my first computer, but I actually have a pre-VIC-20 Commodore adding machine that I bought at a flea market. Where's the REALbasic support for that?

The first computer I had free access to was a TRS-80! (It was my Dads.)

I remember the thrill I got when I realized the raw power of a GOTO statement. The magic of reading BASIC code in from a magnetic tape...

This must've been in the early 80's...

Well, if you need me, I'll be polishing my walker. :-)

The good 'ol GOTO statement on the trusty Apple ][ was always a hit in my elementary school typing labs. For some reason, it was always so fun to leave some random message scrolling in an infinite loop on those green screens...

Ha, there are exactly two options for Internet out here: dialup and satellite. No cable. No DSL. No wireless access, even by ISP-installed transmitter. Nothing.

Satellite costs $80 a month, won't work with gaming due to latency, doesn't work with IPSec VPNs, and only has 512Kbps downstream.

So I'm just looking forward to being at college in September! :-)

Oh man, that's terrible! I'd claim that I feel your pain, but it's been so long since I've been on dial-up that I've pretty much forgotten what it's like. ;-)

So where are you off to this fall?

Princeton, for computer science.

Congrats! And I'm glad to see your going with CS -- I'd hate to lose a brilliant programmer to some lesser cause. :-)
