Answers to REALbasic Trivia #3

| | Comments (6)

#1: What was the codename for the Linux framework project?

It was called "Blue Blanket" -- the logic was this. Linux was made by Linus Torvalds, and Linus was the Peanuts character who always carried around his blue blanket with him. I think Geoff came up with that one. :-P

#2: What product feature was a technology preview for the new compiler?

Why, RBScript of course! RBScript was the way we tested all of the new compiler functionality out before the new compiler "arrived." The new compiler wasn't released until 5.0, but RBScript was using it long before that (Mars can probably note which release it was started in, exactly).

#3: What's the only UI element I was ever in charge of drawing?

The original remote debugger stub had a horrid-looking ladybug icon with all the quality and charm of a mud brick. That bug was made by me, because I was sick of seeing the default icon for the remote debugger stub while I was testing it out. It was too easy to lose track of it otherwise. So I whipped that thing up in MS Paint in about two minutes, stuck it in there, and emailed our graphic designer to get a real one made. Then I woke up one day (a few months later), after the release, and realized I never followed up with our graphic designer. Oops. :-P So the original stub had some pretty programmer art in it before Wes could finally make something more reasonable.

#4: Who was the first REALbasic user ever (yes, this is public knowledge)?

John Balestrieri was the first person to purchase a copy of REALbasic. He purchased it at MacWorld NY in July of 1998, as was announced at one of the REAL World conferences (2004, I believe). He later came on the REAL Software team as a tester for a while as well. Now he does awesome work for the likes of the Associated Press, and is an all-around stand-up guy (which is public knowledge too). And as a few of you pointed out, this is the second time I asked this trivia question. So come round #4, you can be sure this one will be on there again. ;-)

#5: What did REALbasic's original logo look like?

Well, I thought I could locate a copy of it somewhere, but alas, I only have it on my mouse pad. That's the only one I could find!

Usually when a product has a number of things, like the old logo has 3 squares, you know if that meant anything ? Each had a meaning ?

The logos predate me by a fair while, so I don't know the answer to that. But I can make something up and lie to you! :-) Each square represents a turning point in the Irish revolution... ;-P

I am rather proud of my tool also...

C'mon Aaron! You should know that each square represents an OS: Mac, Windows and Linux ;-)

@Carlos: What about the much vaunted VIC-20? Don't be a hater!

Gee, I thought that my guesses were close. :-)
