It's been a long last few days, but rather interesting. On Thursday night, Lis and I drove down to Roseville (just outside of St Paul) to a hotel and crashed. Then on Friday morning, I drove her over to the U of M campus (in St Paul) so that she could meet with professors, sit in on classes, etc. While she was off checking out the grad school, I was in the hotel room working. Amazingly, I was able to get a fair amount of work done. I'm still chugging away on various debugger improvements. Friday's fun was making some new data items and cell managers for some of the more esoteric language features. Basically, playing catch-up. For instance, in REALbasic, you can write dim s as CString = "Foobar" and that makes a CString datatype. But you can't view it in the debugger (and now you can). Little things like that help make the debugger much more useful.
On Saturday, I drove Lis back to the campus because she had more interviews and stuff. Once those were done, she went to the Walker Art Museum with other prospective grad students. I hung out in the commons on campus, paid 5$ for internet access, and had me a blast. I played a fair amount of WoW (brought myself up to level 39 -- now I'm just messing around in the Battlegrounds). But then I had a really good idea on a way to make the debugger more efficient, so I started working on that idea. The proof of concept shows that it works (on Windows, at least) so I'm very excited. Now I just have to find a way to make it work on the Mac and Linux -- then I'll be really tickled.
Saturday evening, after Lis was done with her festivities, we headed back up to St Cloud. I wanted to go try out the re-opened La Casita to see if their Mexican food was any good now. Turns out I wasn't the only one -- there was a 45 minute to an hour wait! So we went over to Guadalajara's instead. The food there was reasonably good, especially since we were both starving. Then, we went home and went to bed. Both of us were fairly well exhausted from the last two days.
So the plan for today is to be fairly lazy. I may put in another hour or two of work doing research on my idea (which I'm keeping under wraps, so Nya!), but that's only if I really am feeling up to it.
Oh, and we're finally getting a bit of snow. About damned time!
Lazy bones, things are a 'happenin, climb aboard.
We finally got some snow... First in a few years... But it didn't stick around at all. But even if it did snow, no classes would be canceled for me, so it is a mixed blessing to go along with the mixed weather.
I spent two hours shovelling the driveway clear wih my tractor so I think we have some snow :)
So you live in St. Cloud. Do you work for RealSoftware and do they have an office there?
-- I am originally from Minneapolis, it was nice to here some stories from home.
@kunicki -- Yup, I live just south of St Cloud in a tiny little town no one's heard of. :-) And yes, I do work for REAL Software, but the only office they have up here is the one in my house. I'm a telecommuter.
As for stories from back home, I tend to put them out fairly frequently since I'm out and about a fair amount. But they tend to be more about the St Cloud area.
It's nice to have a fellow Minnesotan posting again! (There are a few more that post on occasion to, but it's nice to be a part of a growing club.)
Aaron, have you ever gone to see the Prairie Home Companion show, since you are that way? I always wanted to go see one of their joke shows.
@jdiwnab -- ya know, I've never been to a show. IIRC, they broadcast out of the orpheum down in the Cities. What's funny is that I live only about 20 minutes away from the town on which the show is based (he calls it Lake Wobegon, but the town is really Freeport). I've eaten at the cafe (he calls it the Chatterbox, but it's really called Charlie's), and seen many of the sites he talks about. It's a blast to listen to the shown (mom listens religiously, I listen when I get the chance).
I miss you. We are gonna go bowling one weekend. You and Lis WILL come:) And you can finally meet James.
