REAL World, Day 0

| | Comments (7)

I got into Austin on Saturday night, and had a fairly sleepy, yet eventful adventure up to today. However, it was only eventful to me and otherwise rather boring for the rest of the world, so I'll move right along. ;-)

Lis is out in California, soaking up the sun and finding us a place to live. I'm really excited and think she's found some great choices. She gets back into Austin in two days, and hopefully by then, I won't be homeless anymore (once we move).

I've spent the better part of my free time working on some "5%" features for REALbasic. It's little things which aren't that hard to implement, but add some nice polish to existing features (as well as allow for cleaner applications). For instance, the ability to specify the scope of a control (so that consumers of a ContainerControl cannot access the controls within the container). I've got a fair number of these little polish-type things up in the air, so keep your eyes peeled in the future. For anyone who's at REAL World, you're welcome to come bug me to see a bit of the new things I've been playing around with. But, as usual, no promises about whether things actually end up in the product or not. I'm simply playing around to see how various ideas work and whether they're worthwhile or not. Architecting, basically.

The conference itself starts tomorrow, and I've got my first talk at 1pm tomorrow (the talk about threads). I've also got talks on Thur (at 2pm, on Win32) and Fri (at 10am, on design patterns). Outside of my talks, you will most likely find me in the Senate room, which is the "ask the experts" area. The schedule says that it's only open on Thur, but it's unofficially open outside of the scheduled hours (we just don't promise that it's going to be manned outside of Thur).

I hope to see many of you at REAL World! Don't be shy, just come up and say hello. :-)

Good luck with your talks. Sorry I won't be there, but it's probably OK that I'm not -- I'm starting new responsibilities at work and my father's health is always up in the air.

With so many people going there, it makes me kinda wish I had money... Plane tickets cost a bundle, then there is the fee for the conferences.... *sigh* Good Luck!

I heard that your in California right now. So if you get a chance please eat a In-N-Out, double double for me. Sorry this is random, I have just been craving In-N-Out for weeks now.

Hope your having fun, California is a blast.

Aaron

@Scott -- I'll miss seeing you here, but I understand not making it. I hope your father's health improves!

@jdiwnab -- yeah, it can be expensive to come, but boy is it a blast (and if you use REALbasic professionally, well-worth the expense). Maybe some year!

@Aaron -- sorry hombre, but I'm dowin in Austin right now. Lis is the lucky one out in CA currently, but she'll be back here in Austin on Thursday. Hope you're well -- the wedding invite rocks my face; I love it!

>So if you get a chance please eat a In-N-Out, double double > for me.

My favorite! For the few months that I lived on the east coast, that's the one thing I kept craving as well. I'm surprised they haven't expanded farther east throughout the years. Maybe we can meet up at next year's REALworld and I'll pack a few dozen in a cooler...

It was the burritos that were really, really good.

Though big, almost like a football. Sigh, nothing like that in NY.

I ate at an In-and-Out and was underwhelmed, but I'm willing to try again. I think Whataburger has better burgers, as does Kewpie.
