For the past few weeks, I've been working in a new job. I still work for REAL Software, of course. However, my role within the company has changed. I now carry two complementary (not to be confused with complimentary!) new titles. I'm the lead compiler architect, as well as the lead programmer. So what do these sundry titles actually mean? As lead compiler architect, I am in charge of language direction, design and implementation. New compiler features, compiler-related bug fixes, etc are all things which eventually land on my plate. Before you start to fret that I'm going to totally

So I had an interesting thing happen, which I should have seen coming when I posted my wedding photos -- I didn't realize just how many REALbasic users are on Facebook! ;-) But it forced me to do some interesting evaluations I've been able to skirt around before. How much do I mix work with personal life? With my blog, it's more of a "push" model -- if I want everyone to know about personal stuff, such as my wedding, then I can push the content out to my blog and anyone can see it. But Facebook is different in
We finally got our wedding photos back (all 1100+ of them!), and I picked out my favorite 180 to put online. If you're interested in seeing the pictures, I put them up on Facebook for the whole world to see (or ignore, since most people probably aren't *that* interested in our wedding). One Two Three Enjoy!
Just wanted to let everyone know that we're now Mr and Mrs Ballman officially. :-) The wedding was beautiful, not that I remember much of it. Honestly, the entire ceremony was just a blur. The only thing I could do was look at Elissa -- she was so pretty in her wedding dress!! The ceremony went mostly without a hitch. I did manage to forget some of my vows. Heh, oops! The reception was really great. The food was delicious, and our caterer did an amazing job. The DJ did a good job of engaging the crowd, and we danced
Phew! Time flies when you're busy as hell, right? ;-) REAL World went really well this year, but unfortunately I wasn't able to hang out with users nearly as much as I wanted to. I enjoy talking to users, so when I'm not able to do that (but have the opportunity to), it's disappointing. However, on the plus side, I didn't get sick this year! After REAL World, it's been a strange mixture of laid-back hanging around, and chasing like mad to get everything ready for the wedding. We've spent most of our time out in the beautiful countryside of
Oye! I don't think I can handle much more in the way of travel. It's about all I've done for the last month. Lis and I went from CA to TX to visit her family and take care of wedding stuff in the middle of Dec. Then we went from TX to MN to visit my family at the end of Dec. We went from MN back to CA for a few days. Then there was a death in the family, and so we drove from CA back to TX. Then we turned around and drove back. And then a
Well, another year, another Christmas holiday. This year, I'm splitting Christmas day in half -- half the day is down in Texas, half the day at an airport, and half the day in Minnesota (it's a long day!). It's great to be able to see both families. Lis' family celebrates on x-mas eve with the extended relatives. I had a blast, once I was done cooking the tenderloin. :-P Uncle Glenn brought a small portion of his impressive arsenal, which we went down to the pond and shot. I shot the 45 magnum handgun again, which is always cool. But
Every so often, there is talk about a community-driven content project that seems to come up in the REALbasic community. These ideas run the gambit from OSS projects (like the WFS and CDL) to repositories (think SourceForge for RB code), to content (like a documentation wiki), and more. They always have a huge push of "yeah, that's a great idea!" from the community when they are discussed in public forums. However, it's my personal prediction that 99.9% of them end up failing. I know I sound really negative when I say that, but I have enough years of experience watching
Wahoo! I'm done working until the end of the year (actually, I won't be back to work until Jan 3rd or 4th). I'm both looking forward to and dreading my vacation time. Lis and I are flying in to Austin on Saturday, and then we start the parade of vendors for the wedding. For three days, we have at least two vendors to meet and discuss things with. But the hope is that by Thur morning, we will have all of the vendors for the wedding picked out and lined up (with the possible exception of a DJ). While this
(If you're looking for technical details, you're going to be unhappy -- this is a personal post.) It's been a very nice, relaxing past few days at the Ballman/Wampler household. Friday was mostly an off-day from work, so after trying to solve some VPN issues, the day was pretty much my own. I spent it shopping, of all things. If you know me, then you know just how much I can't stand shopping. However, there was enough justification to go out and do it. :-P I started out at Circuit City, looking for some computer equipment. My 12+ year old
